Thanks Adam and Simon for this opportunity
I had an after thought after we spoke about this topic and that is .......
Teams go through developmental stages (Tuckman's theory)of forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. And if a small business invests in the forming stage, clarifying processes and goals etc, then the storming stage and hence conflict may be minimsed.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reminder - it's in there now :)

I think your point about 'inviting discord' is very important. People need to feel that they are contributing. It's much like the point I made about a CEO or business owner communicating the company direction and vision to each employee. This is the reverse of that feedback loop.

Of course, there are limits within business to how much you can let everyone 'take the floor' but the opportunity has to be there.

Thanks for your wonderful feedback,

Simon

Where is the quote??
HI Simon and Adam enjoyed this podcast again It echoes of the work i do mainly in schools to build a successful School/Team.
I agree that leaders defining the culture is imperative and this has to be shared with the rest of the team. ' A vision not shared is a hallucination!" The values you go on to discuss later in the podcast are then the Guiding Principles to frame the 'way' the vision will be achieved. These values have to defined and then some discussion needs to occur within the organization around what these values look like when they are translated into behaviors- otherwise they are just lovely words on paper! It is from these Values too then that the Spirit of feedback for individuals is framed and conducted. These values also then underpin Capacity building for staff re their further development and education.
Your discussion around an Open Culture reminded me of a segment of course I teach in team development around GroupThink( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYpbStMyz_I) Open cultures that invite discord deter false consensus.
Thanks again for your insights and wisdom.

Thanks Chris. We blame Merlin Mann :)

Thinking through communications systems is incredibly important. As you correctly point out, email can result in a 'ping pong' process of back and forth. We are all 'time poor' and getting straight to the point is a definite skill!

I had to double take the title !!!
As is it with headphones on at work..................

To make my life more productive i encourage students to call me with their questions. They hate having to call their lecturer ( sometimes its easier to lie in an email) BUT if I am teaching communication skills i want them to communicate with me. Sometimes it can take a table tennis game of 4 rounds before we get to the issue so I can respond to it! A phone call expedites the process!!

I need to schedule education time, too haphazard at the moment.

Thanks to you both

Hi Chris,

So ultimately it's a resources issue then. You need to identify what you are *absolutely essential to* then create systems for the other stuff.

After that you can employ people or outsource it.

Does that answer your dilemma?

Thanks for the mention and for the info re marketing My work has in the past always sold itself. It has marketed itself, if you do a good job at least 10 people will learn about it . A good opportunity for free marketing is do a good job..the word WILL spread.
Isn't this what has happened at Firebrand.......you offered something that others have experienced then they talked about it and VOILA NOW I am on a waiting list!!
My fear for marketing my business is that it will grow which is great, but when you are the product how do I manage that? An example of the good marketing is the way Jason answers the phone at FF, his social demeanor is very professional Well done.

In one of my insomniac moments I listened to this and when you talked about hard work and overcoming disillusionment i was reminded of this story......We have to work through the horse shit to achieve the good things in life

PS The Xmas tune hut my ears!!

The value of optimism "An insightful story"

"The Psychologist wanted to demonstrate the difference between optimists and pessimists to his class and set up an experiment.

With the co-operation of the parents of twin 8-year-old boys, two rooms of their home were prepared. Early on the morning of the experiment the students gathered at the home of the boys. The Professor explained that the rooms were prepared differently to generate a reaction.

After the boys had woken they were taken down the passage; one to a room on the right; one to a room on the left.

Having allowed half an hour or so to pass, the students and their Professor made their way to the room on the left. Here was the first boy sitting down crying in a room full of the latest toys, everything imaginable, mostly unopened. When asked, "Why the tears?” the boy replied, "It's no good, they always break or don't have batteries, nothing ever goes right."

Leaving this lad to his own devices they made their way to the other room and as they opened the door were struck by a smell. The room was packed full of horse manure. After a moment or two they spotted the second boy, armed with a shovel turning over the manure at a furious pace. When asked what he was doing the boy replied, "With all this horseshit, there has to be a pony in here somewhere!"

"That!” said the Professor of Psychology, "is the difference between an Optimist and a Pessimist."

I'm glad to hear that what we have suggested fits a defined model.

Really enjoyed listening to this there were so many parallels to my work as a social worker and teacher.
There is a big push in schools now for teachers to establish relationships with their students as way of a) addressing the well being needs of young people, b) enhancing learning outcomes and c) reducing behavior problems in the classroom. Those 4 pillars you discussed re business are consistent with what is required in the classroom and coincidentally between a therapist and her client.
The section discussed about, we become aware of what is in our reality once it is in our focus is consistent with the theory on Perceptual Psychology that discusses the 'figure and ground' principle.
Thanks to you both
